Carla Pires is a young fado singer who started to sing at music contests in 1993. After getting a degree in Performing Arts in 1995, Carla Pires continued her start up career as actress and singer by the recording of several soundtracks for TV series. In July of 2000 due to the exposure granted by TV, where she also played roles as actress, Carla was invited to the biggest musical ever produced in Portugal – AMÁLIA, in which she performed, for almost 4 years, the role of Amália Rodrigues at youth. In May of 2002, Carla Pires released the CD “O Fado em Concerto” with the string quartet Quinteto Amália that pushed Fado to an upper level. In this CD, the songs of Amália Rodrigues are backed by classical instruments instead of the traditional fado instruments: Portuguese guitar, classical guitar and acoustic bass. During two years she also sang at “Clube do Fado” one of the most important fado clubs located in the old neighborhood of Lisbon – Alfama. In 2004, the final performances of the musical Amália took place. Carla Pires started to prepare her first solo album. In June of 2005, Carla Pires released ”ILHA DO MEU FADO” (“ISLAND OF MY FADO”) edited by OCARINA label. This CD is a musical journey through fado, with songs from different origins and roots that, somehow or somewhere, changed the scope of fado. One track of this CD “Boca da Noite” was licensed in The Netherlands for the compilation “Global Sounds 2005”, with 60000 copies sold. In Portugal, as a fado singer, Carla Pires performed in the most important theatres, and at prestigious venues like “Festa do Avante” (2004, 2005 and 2006), “Casa de Mateus International Music Festival” and Taizé Meeting in Lisbon. In December of 2004, Carla Pires was invited to perform in London, at Purcell Room in the Queen Elisabeth Hall, as special guest of the Atlantic Waves Festival. She also had concerts in Greece, Japan and Spain. In May of 2005 Carla Pires was back in Japan (Aichi) to perform at the World Exhibition 2005, as ambassador of Portuguese Culture. In 2006 Carla Pires had concerts in Greece (Athens), Sweden (Stockholm and Lund) and Italy (Mantova). In 2007 year she has performed in Spain (Salamanca and Zamora), France (Frontignan) and Turkey (Eskisehir Festival). In 2008 she played in France (12 concerts), Austria, Algeria and Spain.
