Susie, tell me a story! - Seven composers on a recorder quest All stories from anywhere and from any time in the world, even the great epics and legends, can be traced back to seven storylines: seven basic formulas which describe all possible combinations of entanglements, intrigues and ultimate denouement. At least, this is Christopher Booker’s argument in his book The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories which earned him both admiration and profound scepticism when it was published in 2004. These reactions came from leading academics, and because Booker was thorough (he worked for 34 years on his book), and the idea challenging enough, they took him seriously. And, following on their heels, Susanna Borsch did too and arrived at the idea that musical compositions comprise similar structures as stories, with a beginning, a development, a climax and an end. So she devised the plan for a musical story in seven parts, structured in the spirit of Booker, but with a lot of room for abstraction, suggestion and uncertainty.
