Popis - NIGHT TIME IS LONELY TIME:
Van McCoy originated an awful lot of music in his brief 39 years as a writer, producer, arranger and occasional singer. He signed on as a recording artist after several years as a writer for Columbia?s wholly owned music publishing company April-Blackwood. It is quite likely that he was signed as a performer in an attempt to fill the gap left by one of the Columbia labels biggest artists, Johnny Mathis, who had recently departed to join the Mercury label. Van performs such Mathis styled interpretations of standards such as ?How High The Moon?, ?Every Time We Say Goodbye?, ?I Can Dream Can?t I? and ?I Get Along Without You Very Well? as well as a few of his own compositions. The album was produced by Columbia?s long time executive Mitch Miller. By 1968, he became fully freelance and produced scores of notable soul hits including, ?I Get The Sweetest Feeling? ? Jackie Wilson, ?Baby I?m Yours? ? Barbara Lewis, ?Getting Mighty Crowded? ? Betty Everett, ?When Your Young And In Love? ? Ruby & The Romantics (later a much bigger international hit for Motown?s The Marvelettes). Artists such as Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Nancy Wilson and pop artists like Lesley Gore and Bobby Vee also recorded his songs. During this time he also worked closely with Gladys Knight & The Pips at the Maxx label writing and producing such hits as ?Either Way I Lose? and ?Giving Up?. The 70s were just as prolific and alongside work for Motown with David Ruffin on three LPs and the international hit, ?Walk Away From Love? he embraced the world of Disco by reinventing himself as a named performer in 1975 as Van McCoy & His Soul Symphony Orchestra. The first album ?Disco Baby? was released on the Avco Embassy label. A largely instrumental album, the title track was performed by The Stylistics but it was the ?The Hustle? that jumped off the album to be a No.1 hit around the world making McCoy a household name. ?The Hustle? became one of the most popular dance numbers of the 70s. In addition to his writing arranging and performing he was also involved in scoring a couple of movies and TV shows. Here is the first opportunity in many years to enjoy his one solo vocal album.
