At that time I didn't intend to sell my albums to many people because I didn't know how to do it. But I wanted to make it better and did my best efforts to compose and play my guitar works. Now I'm a professional musician and busy producing my new works, but I think it is a pity if nobody knows my previous works into which I put my whole heart and soul. Here I present you two of my cassette albums, which have been recorded digitally by DAT (it was expensive machine for most of the Japanese amateur musicians at that time). Although the recorder was HI-FI, the other equipments (such as microphone, mixer etc.) was still in the lower level (I set my HI-FI recording equipments in 1992, the year I released CD 'Ragtime Guitar'), so I guess the sound quality of these recording sessions were relatively poor. 'Ragtimer, the Cat Star' has been released in 1989. It is my favorite of all of my cassette albums, with nice support by my friend Daisuke Minamizawa, who later becomes famous as the author of 'Solo Guitar no-shirabe' sheet with CD book series. It was direct recording album which was recorded to DAT tape as the listing order without post recording effect. 'Moon Shadow March' has been released in 1990, which was influenced with my guitar hero, Leo Kottke and Preston Reed, and my friend Katsunori Maezawa (the guitarist of 'Kamekobo'). I think it was well recorded, but relatively overpowered and now hearing it makes me tired a little bit. It was my work during the transition to my own guitar style, such as my use of several tunings. It contains the music that only I at that time was good at. Now I think my past playing in this CD isn't always good nor higher level, but I love it. I changed some points at this CD from original cassette version; I omitted 'Freelance Rag' from OTR-002, and 'Ragtime Meeting', 'Flying Seagulls', 'Song of Tonkori', 'Little Wabash Special' from OTR-003. And 'Yas'ya Noka Nociw' was remastered from original tape. I'm so glad if you enjoy this CD. Dec. 1999 HAMADA, Takasi -------------------------------------------------------------- < Ragtimer, the Cat Star > Suite: Stars of Ainu: Composed by the influence of the book 'Constellation of Ainu' (1979) by Tomio Sueoka. As well influenced by the guitar music of Windham Hill Records. 1. Horkew-nociw ('wolf-star' in Ainu : Spica, a Virginis) [Tuning : DGDGBD] According to Kamuyyukar (song of gods) of Ainu, it is a shape of mother wolf watching her daughter who descended to earth from the land of gods. 2. Rupunpe ('water drop of an icicle' in Ainu : Sirius, a Canis Majoris) [Tuning : EADGBE] It was said that there were an incantation of love using icicle in mid or east of Hokkaido. Minamizawa-kun made first part, and I added the other parts. 3. Prelude [Tuning : DGDGBD] Track 3 & 4 have no relation with Ainu constellation, but composed with the image of star. This is the bridge to the next 'Ragtimer, the Cat Star', influenced by John Fahey. 4. Ragtimer, The Cat Star [Tuning : DGDGBD, Capo-2] I think it is one of my best works, featuring banjo-like playing. Dedicated to Mikko, our family's cat died in 1988. 5. Cikusakur ('the ferry man' in Ainu : Altair, a Aquilae) [Tuning : DADF#AD, Capo-1] Ainu recognized three stars of the Eagle as the shape of the man on a ferryboat. According to the tale by Husa Murakami in Shari, he is a kamuy (god) who guards human world and watching Japanese crime from the sky. 6. Erumun-pu ('mice-storehouse' in Ainu : Cancer) [Tuning : DGDGBbD, Capo-2] It may be a shape of gathering the small stars [mice] into the space surrounding by 4 stars. It is said that it shows a good or bad luck in ancient times. It has an eccentric air. 7. Kunne-cup ('dark-sun' in Ainu : Moon) [Tuning : EbGDGBbD, Capo-5] I composed it imaging the moonlight. Later I re-recorded it in the CD 'Flying Seagulls' (1995). I remember my father rarely praised of my guitar play during his lifetime, but this tune was his favorite of my works. 8. Yas'ya-noka-nociw ('seine-shaped-stars' in Ainu : Cassiopeia) [Tuning : DADF#AB] M shape of this constellation seems to the two ship seining. Synthesizer (using the sound of sicu) by Minamizawa-kun takes important part of this work. 9. Here Comes Mr. Maezawa! [Tuning : DF#DGAD] Dedicated to my friend, Katsunori Maezawa, a finest guitarist of 'Kamekobo', hammer-dulcimer & guitar unit. 10. The Theme of Guitar Kamuy [Tuning : DADGBD] Kamuy means 'god' in Ainu. They recognize kamuy to many things beyond human power. I think guitar is the same. 11. Syumpoo Rag [Tuning : DGDGBE] One of my favorite classic rag (image of James Scott) style tune, but relatively difficult to play. 12. Memories of Route 5 [Tuning : EADG#BE] Route 5 in Japan is the road between Sapporo and Otaru, my hometown. 13. Medley : Wind Cat - Ushio-Ondo [Tuning : DADF#AD, Capo-3] 'Wind Cat' is my original solo in the powerful style, and the next 'Ushio-Ondo' is a guitar arrangement. Originally a theme song of the summer festival in Otaru, sang by Haruo Minami, Japanese famous singer. < Moon Shadow March > 14. Syumpoo Dance [Tuning : CAbCFCEb] The first original tune using my original 'Hentai Tuning' in 1990. 15. Little Typhoon [Tuning : DGDDGD] Same as track-14, influenced from the rhythmic guitar style of Leo Kottke, my guitar hero. 16. Urawa-Bojo [Tuning : C#ADF#BE] Urawa is the name of the city in Saitama, where I have lived in. 'Bojo' means elegy in Japanese. 17. Song of Happiness #1 [Tuning : CGCGCD, Capo-2] Another Leo Kottke like tune, but the rhythm is 6/8 which is rare among my works. 18. Song of Happiness #2 [Tuning : CGCGCD] I wrote it at the same period. This #2 is a childish tune. #3 is including in my another CD 'Orion' (2001). 19. Poor Boy Boogie #3 [Tuning : EAC#F#AD] One of my 'guitar boogie' series. #1 and #2 were released in the CD 'The Last Penguin +5' (originally 1986). 20. Moon Shadow March [Tuning : CGFEAC] My rare original for 12-string guitar. 'Breakthrough Tune' (CD 'Ragtime Guitar') is another 12-string tune. The using of monotonic bass is also rare for me. 21. A Running Cockroach [Tuning : CGCGCD, Capo-2] I wrote it under the influence of 'A Day at the Races' by Preston Reed. I intended to make it a sort of comedy tune because I don't like cockroach which isn't seen in Hokkaido. 22. Execise [Tuning : EADGBE] It is not a exercise of playing technic, but a composing study with some jazzy chords.
